Mission

United Way of Berks County improves lives by inspiring collaboration, volunteerism and financial support to build a stronger community.

Vision

Uniting our community to improve lives.

Key Focus Areas

United Way of Berks County tackles complex interconnected issues like school readiness, reading proficiency, financial stability, helping people meet basic needs and leading healthy lives through our four focus areas: EDUCATION, FINANCIAL STABILITY, HEALTH AND SAFETY NET SERVICES.

Our Programs

Ready.Set.READ! initiative

Prepares kids for school and boosts reading skills for children from birth through 3rd grade. Through the initiatives programs (Star Readers, Read Alliance, Growing Readers and Read With Me), we work with schools across Berks County, child care centers located in the City of Reading, area businesses and volunteers to focus on kindergarten readiness, build literacy skills, promote family reading and increase capacity of high-quality child care centers. In the past 9 years, tens of thousands of children across Berks County have benefitted from RSR programs and demonstrates a community commitment to providing our children a greater opportunity to succeed through reading.

Leadership United Programs

Blueprint for Leadership prepares individuals from underrepresented groups for leadership roles. Emerging Leaders United focuses on volunteerism, philanthropy and personal development for our next generation of leaders (ages 21-35). Our Leadership Berks program trains and develops individuals to serve in nonprofit leadership roles through a 9-month curriculum-based program. Our Volunteer Center connects individuals, families and employee teams across the county with volunteer activities throughout the year.

211

Connects people to the help they need. Last year, Berks County residents contacted 211 nearly 14,000 times, with top requests centered on housing/utility assistance, food and health care. 211 is free to all and can be accessed via phone, text and online.
